Her Candle Goeth Not Out By Night

Greetings sisters!
Today I want to share about the diligence of a godly woman in her home.  How many of you love to read Proverbs 31 as encouragement?  Now how many of you are discouraged when you read it?  I ask the last question because when I was first born again, striving for truth and knowledge in the Word, I was overwhelmed at the tasks ahead of me and there were times that it discouraged me because I fell so short of the mark, but all I had to do was remind myself that I need to just take one day at a time.  It makes me think of:

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little (Isaiah 28:10).

Day upon day, year upon year, we become that which we desire; a mature godly woman.  That doesn't mean we will be perfect this side of heaven, but our hearts are set to strive for it. (1 Peter 1:15)

I read an article a long time ago when I was a babe in Christ (sadly I read a lot of so called 'christian' writings which weren't biblical) and in it she claimed that godly women were like slaves to everyone.  Having to give everything of ourselves to them, preferring them over us and to the point of exhaustion and exasperation.  (Clearly this was a feminist woman, and I identified it quickly.)  My point on this is that we are not involuntary slaves to others and if you think you are then you need to examine your heart because when we are born again in Christ, our life becomes second to those around us.  Just as Christ gave Himself for us, we should give of ourselves for others, doing it all unto the Lord, not to be man pleasers or for our own boasting.

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. (Ephesians 6:5-8)

If we are on the path to eternal life, it is a small sacrifice to give our lives for others in order that our light might shine and direct them on the way as well.  We should be joyous that we are able to shine that beacon of light to the lost and be an example to those that the Lord might be giving eyes to see and ears to hear.

Part of that 'giving of ourselves' is (to the best of our physical ability) to be there for others.  In Proverbs 31 we see a very industrious woman, running her household, managing the affairs of their land and assets, taking care of her husband and children as well as others in her life.  We see a woman that is up and going in the morning and into the night.  That doesn't mean she never gets any sleep and it's understandable if you have physical illness or things you are incapable of doing but it's the matter of the heart and willingness to do so when you can.  The contrast is a woman who wants to be pampered, is more concerned about herself and what she wants, making sure she can sleep and rise when she feels like it and letting others fall behind her own desires.

How many of you young mothers are up until late at night with little ones, wondering how you will make it the next day?  One day at a time you go, knowing that they will be grown soon and those days will be a blur, with a yearning to have them back because they flew by so fast.  What about some of you with elderly to care for or a husband who works long or odd hours...or those of you who are single and working for yourself and taking care of others?  The Lord will give you just what you need for each day and if we are faithful in today, He will give us what we need tomorrow.  We do this all unto the Lord, not complaining or murmuring- that's sin you know- (Philippians 2:14) and not growing weary.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9)

Years ago I asked for help making bread and the responses given were some helpful tips and then the admonishment to pray to God to help me learn.  I share with you that if you lack the heart of a servant, pray to God to help you learn how to be one, while you obey, and He will answer.   It's not an easy path, the one of a godly woman, but if we beat our flesh into submission it becomes easier over time.  In my unregenerate state before Christ, I used to break horses the fast (hard) way which means you ground work them for a time then you just get in the saddle and ride them until you break their will and they obey you. (I don't endorse that.) I simply used that as an illustration as to how we must break our flesh and it could entail a rough ride until it happens.

I love that verse about her candle not going out by night because it also refers to her insides.  She doesn't clock in as a loving servant to others than clock out when she's done, it's something she becomes.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

Love in Christ,
Sister Deb
