Pet Idolatry

Greetings sisters in Christ,
I pray that today brings you peace and joy.


Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

I'm sure many of you see the pet idolatry that is growing in popularity? People who don't have pets can clearly see it in most of those who do, although they deny it.  We have seen a simple test failed time and time again in the past many years of being in ministry...let me share with you what that test is:

Look at the life of a professed believer and watch how they feed that pet every day.  They pet it every day.  They walk it every day.  They clean up after it every day.  They shower it with love every day.

Do they do that with the brethren.....every day?

Before anyone gets angry (I'll address the anger issue in a moment), let me say that we are not against having animals and taking care of them as they can be a wonderful tool and have many uses.  What we are warning Christians about is when they turn into idols and give them more love and attention than the owners give to the brethren and those in their life.  

That picture I posted is of a store, totally dedicated to the holistic needs of a pet. It contains expensive foods, supplies and various items for all different pets.  Holistic means:

relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts

I would like to challenge those of you who have pets to think about that meaning and see if you also apply that to the brethren in your life.  Are you concerned with wholeness of the body of believers?  Who do you love more, your pet or the brethren?  If you get angry because someone mentions pet idolatry, could it be conviction?

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
1 John 3:14  

Many have claimed their pet is not their idol but when an issue comes up in the body of believers, they easily walk away, yet if they lose their pet or it dies they are all distraught and cry more tears over losing the animal than they did in losing the brethren.  The proof is right before their eyes but they are blind to it, we've seen it firsthand many times.

There will be no pets in heaven...and if you have pet idolatry, you won't be either.

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10

There are many things that satan can distract us believers and this is just one.
