Fireflies, Frogs, Marsupials and More... God's Creation
Good afternoon sisters!
We are enjoying listening to the frogs signing at night in the cool spring air. What a chorus of perfect harmony and a blessing of tranquility to our ears! I like to share posts on God's creation because it's glorifying to Him and if you have children in your life, it's fun to look up information on various creatures so they can learn about them.
We took a walk the other night...
The moon was out along side a bright star that seems to always be in the same spot. As we were walking, and the darkness fell, we saw the lights of fireflies. (If you don't know what they are, it's a flying insect that flashes light from its lower parts and what a bright light it makes!) It looks like this:
I tried to catch them as they were flashing all over, it was amazing:
The pictures are blurry because it was nighttime and you can really only see the one on the lower pic. I put them both up anyway:-) The moon was bright enough to light our way but not so bright as to drown out the fireflies. What amazing creatures!
One day brother Jim was outside and called to me through the window saying: 'I was wondering why we don't see any of these things, come here and look.' A toad...
We were used to seeing them all over in Wisconsin and were surprised that we'd never seen any here since it's warmer and we clearly hear frogs of all sorts, every night except in winter.
Normally at this time we see a lot of box turtles moving across lawns and roads but not this year. Here's an example of one kind:
Once in a while we see a snapping turtle, here's an example of one kind:
They have a snapping jaw that is quite viscous. When I was a child my older brothers found one and put it in a stock tank with some water. I recall standing there watching it wondering if it would snap my arm if I put it in there by it and I'm praising God I never fell to that temptation to see as it was a big one and would have done much harm to me.
As I type this I hear something right outside our window chewing on something in the dark. It might be that big raccoon brother Jim saw earlier and scared away. (He set up a box trap to see if we can catch it and remove it from the property so they don't cause damage, like they normally do.)
In case you don't know what a raccoon is, this is what one looks like:
They have a really cute face but oh, they can be naughty rascals! They can get into containers, climb on your roof and destroy gardens.
We did catch something in the trap but it wasn't a raccoon...
The babies were really cute and they live in a pouch on the mother (how did evolution pull that one off? Not!) Opossum are called marsupial. Brother Jim didn't want to relocate her because of the babies so he let her go...
Several days ago I told brother Jim I heard an Oriel.
I know this is about the time they fly through so I got out some jelly and he put it up on the bird feeder along with half an orange. I prayed God would let me see it as they are one of my favorite birds. The male is bright orange and the female (when the sun hits her right) is a green. They're so cute sticking together as a pair.
God be praised for all His work.
I thought all this would bring a smile to your face and give you some things to look up if you have children. They usually are interested in learning facts about animals and the creation. Have a joyous day sisters.
Blessings,
Sister Deb
