Obedient Godly Women of Old...Dorcas (Tabitha)

Greetings sisters in Christ!
Today let's look at another Godly woman of old...Dorcas (Tabitha).  It's a short account but profound.

36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.
37 And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.
40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
41 And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
42 And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.
Acts 9:36-42

Vs 36 Shows her love and care for others through good works and almsdeeds (defined as: compassionateness, beneficence, mercy, pity, donation to the poor)  We see she was kind, loving, compassionate to the poor, involved in the lives of widows and thus her fruit, and praise of it, is shown for all of history to the world.

Vs 42 We see that she must have been well known for the fruit of her godly life because all throughout Joppa, many heard and believed.

It makes me think of:

Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
Proverbs 31:31

And...

And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.
Ruth 3:11

These women had works that were well known.  Let that be an example for us godly women that our good works, our compassion and mercy are well known by those in our life.  We may not be well known in our city, but those who are entwined in our life or we have constant contact with, should be witness to the power of God at work in our life which shows through in our deeds.

To God be the glory!
