Modify a Skirt Waist

 Greetings sisters in Christ!

Praise God for every day we have to glorify our Father by being a living example of a transformed life, to those around us.  Let the word go out.

This is just a quick post on how to modify a skirt waist, based on a conversation with a sister about finding clothes at thrift stores and modifying to fit us.  It's very easy to do and if you have a sewing machine you can do it in about 5 minutes.  It takes longer to set up the machine than it does to modify:-)

See the picture below. (I'm not an artist:-)

All you need to do is sew the corners of the skirt to take it in just enough that it won't fall off your hips.  Cut off the excess material and you are done!  It works best if you leave the skirt right side out so that you don't have a raw edge against you. Yep, it looks unfinished and yep, you may have a bulge there, yep it might make the skirt stick out a bit more in the hip area.  What do I say to that?

If you are concerned about those issues you might want to check your heart because clothing is simply a sin covering and the waist of a godly woman is concealed with a long baggy shirt so nobody will see it.  If you are concerned about a bulge, then you have vanity and pride and I would have you check your heart and your wardrobe because if anyone can see those little bulges or bad seams, then your clothing is not biblical.  I know all about perfection, vanity and pride because I had some to kill when I was born again.  I was the queen of vanity and my clothing had to fit just right but as a true saint of God, none of that matters.  We should be content if all we had was a big sheet to drop over hour head and gather it somewhat to keep if from flying up.  We'd look big and frumpy then but that seems to be what they may have worn back in the bible times.

We see too many professed believers (men and women) skirting the edge of 'modesty' but we call it biblical dress because the two are nowhere near the same.  (You can read an article about biblical vs modest: http://spiritandtruthdiscernment.blogspot.com/search/label/Biblical%20dress%20vs%20Modest%20Dress )

The skirts / dresses (or pants in the case of men) are fit just right, smooth and sleek with the perfect shirt laying over it, giving the illusion of modesty but not being biblical.  One group we see that in is the Mennonites.  The women sew their dresses just an inch or two bigger than their body so when they move it's clear to see their form, their shape, how much they weigh etc.  A biblical woman will be shamefacedly disguised so none of that is clearly known.

Brother Jim brought up the fact the fabric stores and all the different choices of colors and quality, leading women down a rabbit trail of their flesh.  I don't have to go into the details because I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about there.

Disclaimer: if you sell products that you make, of course you will make a quality product for the customer.  This post is about us sisters covering ourselves in the least expensive, simplistic way without getting caught up in fleshly areas.  No it's not sinful to do a good job sewing your own clothes either, just keep in mind the matter of the heart while doing it.

I have some elastic waist skirts that I have not sewn while out on the road but instead have taken safety pins, gathered up the excess and pinned it.  The skirt then has a bulge and doubled over pleat (or two) but I don't care because all this is going to burn anyway, isn't it?

So there you go, a very fast, simple way to modify a skirt and anyone can do it, sewing machine or not.

Here's a real life example of killing the flesh in the perfectionist area:

See brother Jim's new vest?

Now look closely...

All we did was go to a thrift store and get a big shirt, cut it down the center, cut out the zipper at the top and cut off the sleeves.  Yep, the seams look like I cut it with my cheap pair of scissors but we don't care.  Sin coverings, that's what they are.

Let's use our extra time to focus on the things of God and trying to be a light and good witness to those around us, amen?! (Not sure what's up with blogger but it changes the font for no reason, I didn't do that nor did I do it on any of the other posts:-)

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5)

Have a joyous day in the Lord!

Love in Christ,

Sister deb
